PHOENIX: And I found that Dr. Small was the choice for me simply because he was the only doctor that I felt comfortable to perform the surgery I was looking for. And I had a radiated breast with an implant underneath it and every year that went by, that implant became more and more and more constricted. Whenever I would try to lift, reach out there was always chronic pull across my neck, down my chest and across the center of my back. So even the smallest movement of grasping something would cause tension and pain and as I am a painter, that was extremely excruciatingly difficult for me. So I needed relief. I needed some way to start living my life as a whole person.

We're not told that if we have a tran flap that, you know, we're taking vital muscles out of our stomach area in order to have a breast, which was going to affect our ability to walk. The D-I-E-P, the diep flap takes that same tissue, gives you that same tummy tuck and puts that breast, all that tissue, just when you were kidding and you used to say, gosh if only this was my breast I would really look great, well that's exactly what happened. So now I have this incredibly flat stomach with this nice, beautiful breast. And just like he promised two weeks after I had gone through surgery I picked up a pencil and all of a sudden I had dexterity in my fingertips that I hadn't had for years and I could see how much this meant to him. That he really, truly cared about making this difference to people and I was so impressed that I had to do a painting of him in order to honor him and how I see him through that art. He's not just doing this, he is performing magic at a technical level and I am incredibly grateful.
