DONNA: It is certainly a traumatic thing to have to lose a part of your body for any reason, but having successfully nursed my son, I felt as though this was not a part of me that I was willing to hold on to for the sake of my life. At 44 and one pregnancy behind me I felt as though it was time for a little bit of maintenance work and this was my opportunity to really have it done at the hands of a skilled surgeon.

From the day I met him I was taken by his hands. He has an artist's hands. They look as though they ought to be sculpting clay or carving marble. He really struck me as somebody that had the same sort-of vision that I wanted for myself and I thought he could really deliver that.

I actually only needed to have one breast removed, I volunteered the second one as a consideration for the cosmetic outcome. My husband is quite pleased with them. My son was eight years old at the time we went through this and we both decided that the attitude we wanted to project to him was one that you should take your hurdles in life cleanly like a good jumper and to those ends he was very supportive and most appreciative of Dr. Small's work and the outcome.

I feel the same as I did before. I have no limitations of any sorts of capabilities. I personally think I came out of it looking better than I did going in. And that's not a small portion of getting past the diagnosis. And the restoration of a feminine form, if not function, is something that's achievable and thank God if I had to have breast cancer that it was in the 21st century. I love him, he's the best.
