MADELINE: It was very, very hard going through the surgery because I lost my husband, I lost my mother, I lost a brother, everybody I took care of, now I was losing a piece of myself. But I feel like this breast has been with me my whole life. I feel wonderful. I feel my life has begun again and it's all due to Dr. Small.

When I was diagnosed I was devastated. I, like I said, nurse knew what it was about but when it's you it is completely different. I was petrified, I had nobody to go through it with me, I was all alone, I remember getting the diagnosis and sitting in the car and crying. Couldn't drive home for a while and all I could think about was what was I going to tell my children? I'll be honest with you, I said, whatever the Lord wants that will be the way it is.

At first I wasn't going to have reconstruction, I said I'm old, I don't need it, well that was my thought, that was my thought, I was depressed and I said awh. Just talking to him and listening to him, he did not push me, he said if you want to have it done at a later date. By the time I walked out of that office I knew that I was going to have Dr. Small do my reconstruction.

This man is the most caring, compassionate man, always there to look after you. That journey that I thought was going to be so terrible was an experience and I have to say Dr. Small has turned my life around. I have lost 35 pounds, he has always cheered me on, I feel beautiful. I feel like a woman again. I feel like I have something back that I have lost. He is my hero, Dr. Small.
